If you follow the Clan blog closely you know that I’m obsessed with “weird” sports stories, especially when they take on a serious personal interest story angle. I think it has to do with my father and I talking so obsessively about sports, and sports personalities, when I was a child - and near the end of his life, it was the one thing we could talk about to relax and not worry about the problems around us. I’ve already posted about some of my favorites (Turk Wendall, Big Bird Fidrych), but a new story to watch is emerging from Major League Baseball, and I hope you guys find it as interesting as I do.
A red hot blue chip prospect out of high school, Greinke battled anxiety and clinical depression so heavily that he walked away from baseball after his rookie year when he was 22, after a climaxing serious breakdown in front of coaches during a practice. After a few years away, where supposedly he worked tirelessly to ditch his depressive demons, he has returned in 2009 as the best pitcher in baseball with 4 wins, no losses and the fact that he is yet to give up an earned run this season. You can read more about, and then root for tirelessly, Greinke, by CLICKING HERE.
